Joint AAS-ICAS conference at Hawaii in 2011
To celebrate its 70th anniversary, the Association for Asian Studies (AAS) is holding a special joint conference with the International Convention of Asia Scholars (ICAS) in Honolulu, Hawaii, USA, 31 March – 3 April 2011. The 2011 Conference Program will be available online early in 2011, but registration will open on September 15, 2010.
The Association for Asian Studies (AAS) is the largest society of its kind, with approximately 7,000 members worldwide, open to all persons interested in Asia. ICAS was launched in 1995 as a joint project between AAS and the International Institute for Asian Studies (IIAS) in Netherlands. This transatlantic dialogue gradually matured and was thought of as a process involving American and European Asia scholars. Its main goals are to transcend the boundaries between disciplines, between nations studied, and between the geographic origins of the Asia scholars involved.
ICAS has grown into the largest biennial Asia studies event outside the US covering all subjects of Asia studies. Thus ICAS now has become the only major, regular Asia studies event to take place in Asia. On average the number of participants varies between thousand and fifteen hundred.
Venue for the joint conference: Hawai'i Convention Center, Kalakaua Avenue, Honolulu. More information.
Delhi Universty conference on South Asian Migration
The Indian Formation Research Society organises a conference on ”Culture, Politics and Economics of South Asian Migration”, 24–26 Novermber 2010 at the University of Delhi, India. The conference focuses on the fact that South Asia is the world's largest and, perhaps, most significant region for migration studies. With a documented history of more than 4,000 years, migration from and within South Asia remains today at the heart of many contemporary global relationships and processes. Yet despite its multi-faceted origins and latter-day importance, South Asian migration has hitherto not received the type of theoretical-empirical study that its contradictory nature demands. This conference posits that South Asian migration has unique characteristics that necessitate a complimentary interdisciplinary and international approach to both conceptualisation and fieldwork. The conference is organised as an interdisciplinary and politically independent gathering. The organisers are of the opinion that an open and democratic debate is necessary of the serious challenges faced by South Asian populations. Deadline for abstracts is 20th September 2010.
Colombo conference on Reconciliation & Development
A conference entitled ”Reflections 2010: Managing Diversity, Reconciliation & Development” will be held in Colombo, Sri Lanka, 1–3 November 2010. It is organised by FLICT (Facilitating Local Initiatives for Conflict Transformation), a project in the field of peace building and conflict transformation based on a bilateral cooperation agreement between the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka and the Federal Republic of Germany. The project is managed by the German Technical Cooperation (GTZ).
In the recent past Sri Lanka has seen renewed interest in effective interventions around reconciliation and development. Such efforts will greatly benefit from research and experience sharing. The opportunity presented by the cessation of hostilities, makes this all the more relevant and timely. In this context, the conference is being organized to bring together persons interested in the subject area; practitioners, educators, trainers, students and policy makers – both local and international. The papers presented will cover the following themes, relevant to a post-war situation: – Reconciliation; – Human Rights; – Governance; – Development; – Diversity; – Change Management; and – Gender.
The Annual Conference on South Asia
The 39th Annual Conference on South Asia will be held on October 14 - 17, 2010 at the Madison Concourse Hotel, 1 West Dayton St., Madison, WI 53703. The Conference is hosted by the Center for South Asia at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. This year the Conference is pleased to recognize and celebrate 50 Years of South Asia at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. We especially encourage alumni of UW-Madison to join us!
The Annual Conference on South Asia attracts over 500 scholars and other interested parties annually, who travel from a dozen countries around the world and much of the United States including Hawaii and Alaska. The conference features nearly 100 academic panels and roundtables, as well as association meetings and special events ranging from performances to film screenings.
Another important component of the conference is our exhibit space. University presses, independent publishers, and non-profit organizations provide the conference participants with high quality resources and the best publications on South Asian topics. The exhibit space is also a great opportunity to meet with other scholars and to connect with the booksellers.

National Peace Academy - Peacebuilding Peacelearning Intensive
The week-long Peacebuilding Peacelearning Intensive is designed for individuals and organizations who hope to launch new peacebuilding and change initiatives or enhance existing efforts. Participants will be coached in the design and development of a strategic peacebuilding plan that they will take back to and implement in their community or initiate in an organization they already work with. The plan will be assessed and evaluated by instructors and peers, and the National Peace Academy will provide ongoing guidance for project development after completion of the Intensive.
The Peacebuilding Peacelearning Intensive is intended to advance the development of the full spectrum of knowledge, skills and capacities of the peacebuilder – inner and outer, personal and professional. In doing so it will provide a holistic introduction to the theory and practice of peacebuilding and will engage participants in cooperative learning experiences designed to empower citizens to critically inquire into what needs and conditions are necessary for assuring a sense of security personally and socially; to envision, plan and strategize for the establishment of a just and sustainable social, political and environmental order that assures each and every citizen is safe, secure and able to live with dignity; and to facilitate the individual and communal learning required to make such transformations possible.

International Institute on Peace Education (IIPE) 2010
IIPE was founded in 1982 by Dr. Betty Reardon and faculty colleagues at Teachers College Columbia University and has been held annually in different parts of the world. For 27 years the IIPE has been providing unique short-term, residential, cooperative learning experiences in peace education. The IIPE is not a conference but rather a “learning community” in which the organizers and participants work together to nurture an inclusive, highly interactive learning environment toward practicing a culture of peace. It is a multicultural and cooperative, intensive experience in which participants interact through plenaries, workshops, reflection groups and informal activities to learn from and with each other about substantive peace issues and interactive teaching approaches. The IIPE is also an opportunity for networking and community building among those who educate and work for a culture of peace in the host region and around the world.
The theme that will form the common inquiry of IIPE 2010 is “Learning to Read the World from Multiple Perspectives: Peace Education toward Diversity and Inclusion.” This theme encompasses many of the concerns experienced by peace educators throughout Colombia and around the world. “Learning to read the world” is understood as reflecting multiple realities, including varied representative voices, and valuing limitless - even conflicting or contradictory - perspectives through participation in dynamic and fair, nonviolent exchanges. The processes of dialogical and reciprocal learning are as important as the exchange of best practices and alternative strategies in order to open boundless opportunities.
Specifically, through inquiry into the overarching theme, IIPE 2010 participants will collaborate to identify, develop and strengthen national, regional and international networks of peace educators, with the capacities to influence public policies that reflect the needs and positive potential for inclusive and participatory governance. The practical objectives are to learn to create and facilitate dialogic opportunities, cooperative projects, and physical spaces for interaction amongst diverse and often excluded groups. In addition, practical pedagogical aims are to expand peace-learning practices in order to contribute human rights, inclusion, social justice, equity and ecological health as the goals of public policy. Education on all levels - formal and informal, life-long and intensive - is seen as the means for nurturing the capacities relevant to participation in peace building for a sustainable, life-enhancing society.

Call for Good Practices, 5th International Barcelona Conference on Higher Education
The Call for Good Practices aims to make connections between the key ideas being examined in the Conference and good practices taking place ´on the ground´. The selected good practices will be presented in the parallel sessions at the 5th International Barcelona Conference on Higher Education and will be published in the next Report Higher Education in the World 4.
In order to orient higher education to a committed contribution of knowledge towards a sustainable world, most of the aspects of the current educational system, including its values and its norms, must be reconsidered. The educational context teaches through the structures, methodologies, and assumptions underlying the curricula. Higher education can provide graduates with the attitudes, knowledge and abilities required to undertake this process; and it can develop and provide knowledge that contributes to research and practice into sustainability. There is also an upcoming major role for higher education related to the renewal of thought, by making knowledge accessible and useful in the broader sense of engagement with society.
Several universities have included sustainability courses in their curriculum, dedicated resources to sustainability research and centre development, while others also have bolstered their connection to the community by participating in local problem-solving, becoming a laboratory of ideas including a responsible management of material and human resources.
Therefore, GUNI looks for examples of good practices in the following thematic lines:
- Curricula Innovation and Learning Processes
- Research
- Social and Community Engagement
- Institutional Management and Operations
This way, the GUNI Conference extends its scope by giving voice to individuals and institutions from around the world that have examples of good practices to share. It will facilitate dialogue between the participants and provide a space for knowledge interchange. There will also be a previous on-line forum in order to debate and prepare the material that will be worked on in the Conference.
Please see the thematic lines and the general criteria of acceptance at: http://www.guninetwork.org/
The deadline of submission of abstracts is 31 May 2010.
